Give the edge to Dune: Part Two and it's forward motion carrying the day. 2049 moves at the speed of grief; Part Two moves like an army, and an army is easier to follow than a lone man brooding through a dead city. Villeneuve gives the sequel a real spine in Chalamet's turn from reluctant exile into something colder, the desert closing around his choice. 2049 is the stranger, sadder film, and its defenders love it for exactly the qualities that keep others at arm's length. The result tilts, just, toward the film that sweeps a viewer forward rather than asking them to sit still inside a synthetic man's grief.
