Villeneuve gives the sequel a real spine in Chalamet's turn from reluctant exile into something colder, the desert closing around his choice. 2049 is the stranger, sadder film, and its defenders love it for exactly the qualities that keep others at arm's length. The result tilts, just, toward the film that sweeps a viewer forward rather than asking them to sit still inside a synthetic man's grief.
