DiCaprio crying in his trailer after nailing a scene he thought he'd blown is the moment Once Upon a Time reveals its real subject: not the Manson murders, not Sharon Tate, but a man reckoning with the possibility that he's already done his best work. Tarantino shot that scene with a tenderness absent from Kill Bill, and the tenderness resonates. Kill Bill 2 has superior structure, cleaner payoffs, the Pai Mei sequence. But Once Upon a Time has an emotional maturity the revenge film doesn't access. When the late film leads, voters are choosing the Tarantino who stopped performing cool and started mourning it.
