The original Moana is one of those family movies that's almost impossible to vote against: a gorgeous ocean adventure, a hero worth rooting for, and a Lin-Manuel Miranda songbook the whole car learns by heart. Moana 2 brings the character and the water back, but the original creative team and that one unstoppable "How Far I'll Go" kind of anthem didn't make the trip. The sequel is bright and likeable, and the kids will happily watch it. It just doesn't have the songs that made the first one stick. For movie night, the original is the proven crowd-pleaser, and it isn't especially close when the music does the talking.
