28 Years Later

Gatekeeper Strong in semis, fades in finals
2025 · Horror, Thriller, Science Fiction · Danny Boyle

28 Years Later is a legitimate contender — but there's a gap between 'contender' and 'champion' that shows up in the round data. At 57%, it wins its share; it just rarely wins the last one. Decades of anticipation arrive as bracket momentum before a single vote is cast. The question is whether the film earns that goodwill on its own terms or spends it on borrowed time from a beloved predecessor. Voters pick in 1.3s on average — well under the 3.5s platform norm.

Synopsis

Twenty-eight years since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one member departs on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.

The ceiling

Close but not quite. 75% in the semis says genuine contender; 39% in the final says there's a gap between contending and winning that 28 Years Later hasn't closed.

Together is the nearest thing to a true rival at 54%. The margin is slim and the outcome still feels unsettled. On the other end of the spectrum: The Ugly Stepsister at 77% is a comfortable win, while Sinners at 29% is the matchup 28 Years Later can't crack.
