GoodFellas
A strong film that's strongest when the bracket is deepest. GoodFellas at 60% across 194 matchups is already above average — and the late-round numbers push it higher. A masterpiece by nearly any measure, operating at a level of craft and energy that most films never approach. Its only vulnerability in competition is a recognition gap against more mainstream opponents. Among Martin Scorsese's films on BingeBracket, nothing beats it.
Synopsis
The true story of Henry Hill, a half-Irish, half-Sicilian Brooklyn kid who is adopted by neighbourhood gangsters at an early age and climbs the ranks of a Mafia family under the guidance of Jimmy Conway.
Each round is better than the last: 55% opening, 58% semi, 79% final. The competition gets tougher and GoodFellas gets better — a pattern that doesn't show up often.
Saving Private Ryan is the easy matchup at 86%. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is the kryptonite at 33%. The gap between best and worst opponent says a lot about what GoodFellas can and can't handle.
GoodFellas owns Spielberg vs. Scorsese. The Departed is the usual final opponent, and at 85% it's not much of a contest.
Of Martin Scorsese's 4 films tracked here, GoodFellas sits on top. The Departed follows at 57%.
