How to Train Your Dragon

Strong Contender Wins well above average
2010 · Fantasy, Adventure, Animation, Family · Chris Sanders, Dean DeBlois

How to Train Your Dragon wins more than most. At 61% across 117 head-to-head matchups, it consistently comes out on top. The DreamWorks film that proved the studio could make you cry as easily as laugh: a boy-and-dragon friendship earned an inch at a time, flight sequences lit like a real sunset, a John Powell score built to soar. That emotional reach gives it a pull on a ballot that gag-driven cartoons rarely match. Among Chris Sanders's films on BingeBracket, nothing beats it.

Synopsis

As the son of a Viking leader on the cusp of manhood, shy Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III faces a rite of passage: he must kill a dragon to prove his warrior mettle. But after downing a feared dragon, he realizes that he no longer wants to destroy it, and instead befriends the beast – which he names Toothless – much to the chagrin of his warrior father.
