The Empire Strikes Back
Most films have a weak round. The Empire Strikes Back doesn't. 55% across 190 head-to-head matchups, consistent whether it's facing a first-round underdog or a final-round elite. The cultural consensus that this is the best Star Wars film gives it a structural advantage no competitor can erode — voters aren't just choosing a movie, they're affirming a position that decades of discourse have already settled.
Synopsis
The epic saga continues as Luke Skywalker, in hopes of defeating the evil Galactic Empire, learns the ways of the Jedi from aging master Yoda. But Darth Vader is more determined than ever to capture Luke. Meanwhile, rebel leader Princess Leia, cocky Han Solo, Chewbacca, and droids C-3PO and R2-D2 are thrown into various stages of capture, betrayal and despair.
The gap between The Empire Strikes Back's best and worst round is just 14 points. That kind of steadiness is unusual — most films look different depending on when you check on them. This one doesn't.
The Dark Knight is the nearest thing to a true rival at 47%. The margin is slim and the outcome still feels unsettled. The extremes tell a clear story — 67% against Alien at one end, 25% against The Godfather Part II at the other.
Original or Sequel? Classic Sci Fi is The Empire Strikes Back's tournament to lose. The final against The Terminator at 63% is competitive but the outcome is consistent.
