Junger's adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew works because it takes the source material seriously enough to build genuine antagonism between Ledger and Stiles before letting them fall for each other. The paintball scene, the prom, the poem — each beat earns the next. Showalter's film has Hathaway delivering a performance significantly better than the material requires, elevating a premise that could be disposable into something watchable. But watchable isn't the same as necessary. At 71 to 29, voters choose the film that became a generational touchstone over the one that became a pleasant streaming surprise.
