John Coffey healing the warden's wife — Duncan's hands on her face, the moths pouring from his mouth — is Darabont pushing supernatural kindness so far past plausibility that it becomes its own kind of realism. The Green Mile asks you to believe a man too gentle for the world was sentenced to die in it. Big asks you to believe a child woke up in an adult's body and went to work. Both premises require faith from the audience. The gap says the faith that leads to tragedy outperforms the faith that leads to comedy. Coffey's fate is more devastating than Josh's return.
