Momentum and transformation pull together when Part Two leads. Sicario is a superb, airless exercise, but its arc is subtraction — an agent reduced, sidelined, left with less than she came in with. Part Two is addition, Chalamet gathering force until the desert seems to move at his word, a rise staged on a scale almost no one attempts. What pulls it toward Part Two is the wish to watch a character grow into power rather than get stripped of it. A film about diminishment is a hard sell against a film about ascension, however brilliant the diminishment.
