Prisoners was Villeneuve's proof he could hold a wide American audience without softening, a grim genre piece delivered with the control of someone who already knew he was headed somewhere. Dune is where that somewhere arrived, a franchise built on a book that had beaten every prior attempt. When the earlier film pulls this far ahead, the calling card is still hitting harder than the empire it bought. Prisoners traps you with one father's unbearable choice and never blinks; Dune, by design, is only the first half of its story, magnificent and unfinished.
