The Verdict Decade Duel
Jurassic Park's kitchen scene — the raptors testing the door handles, the children hiding behind the counter, Spielberg cutting between the claw and the breathing — generates more tension from two rubber puppets and a stainless-steel kitchen than The Avengers generates from its entire VFX budget. Whedon's strength is dialogue and ensemble management, and the Avengers banter is genuinely sharp. But banter doesn't generate dread the way Spielberg's spatial filmmaking does. The lead says voters respond to the film that makes them hold their breath over the one that makes them smile. Tension is a harder effect to achieve than fun.
