The Deer Hunter currently beats The Post 55–45
Vietnam trauma edges out Pentagon Papers courage.
The Verdict Decades Apart
Walken in the Saigon gambling den — playing Russian roulette voluntarily now, the trauma having rewired his relationship to risk — is a performance that makes The Deer Hunter's thesis visible: war doesn't end when you come home, it just finds new rooms to occupy. The Post's performances are excellent in a different register — Streep and Hanks navigating institutional power with the precision of two stars who know exactly what they're doing. But precision and devastation compete differently. The lead says the film that devastates outperforms the one that impresses. Walken's dead eyes in that gambling den carry more weight than any amount of newsroom urgency.
