The Departed currently edges Your Name. 54–46
Crime swagger edges cosmic longing in a genre culture clash.
The Verdict
Jack Nicholson dropping the severed hand on the barroom table isn't subtle, isn't necessary, and is absolutely why The Departed wins matchups like this. Scorsese makes films where excess is the point — every scene runs hot, every performance is turned up past comfortable, and the cumulative effect is a movie that refuses to let you look anywhere else. Shinkai's Your Name. works through restraint and ache, which is its own power, but at 54 to 46 the louder film takes the room. Longing is a slow burn. Scorsese doesn't do slow burns.
