Star Wars

Front-Runner Starts strong, fades late
1977 · Adventure, Action, Science Fiction · George Lucas

Star Wars builds an impressive record against weaker competition — then loses it in the late rounds. At 53% overall, the number flatters it slightly. The film that invented the modern blockbuster carries institutional weight no competitor can match. The question is whether reverence translates to active preference, or whether voters treat it as the safe pick they feel obligated to make. 1.2s average. Quick enough to suggest a snap judgment, slow enough to involve a flicker of thought.

First impressions are Star Wars's best weapon — 67% in the opening round is its peak. The semis dip to 33%, the final recovers to 50%, but that opening number remains the high-water mark.

The extremes tell a clear story — 67% against The Grand Budapest Hotel at one end, 24% against Jurassic Park at the other.
