Incendies finds the answer in the past, a buried family history unspooling toward something monstrous. Prisoners finds it in the present, a good man's descent measured against the ticking of a missing-child case. They finish even because the question is identical and only the tense changes. Incendies digs its horror out of the past. Prisoners makes you watch it happen live. A viewer torn between them isn't undecided so much as unwilling to say which is worse: the violence you inherit or the violence you choose.
