Incendies
40% overall doesn't tell the real story for Incendies. This is a film that gets stronger as tournaments advance — a better matchup in a final than its win rate suggests. The film that earned Villeneuve everything after it is also his quietest devastation, a deep cut most voters have to be talked into. It repays that leap with a final revelation heavy enough to reframe everything before it, the kind of ending people don't shake loose. 1.7s avg decision time (platform avg: 3.5s). No deliberation needed.
Synopsis
A mother's last wishes send twins Jeanne and Simon on a journey to Middle East in search of their tangled roots. Adapted from Wajdi Mouawad's acclaimed play, Incendies tells the powerful and moving tale of two young adults' voyage to the core of deep-rooted hatred, never-ending wars and enduring love.
The semis are unkind at 27%, down from 42% in the opening. But the final rewrites the narrative: 67%. The dip is real, but it's the recovery that defines Incendies.
Against Dune, the margin is razor-thin: 50%. The most contested matchup in Incendies's record. Arrival is the film Incendies can't figure out — just 18% in their matchups.
The Best of Denis Villeneuve final between Incendies and Dune is genuinely contested at 50%. Neither film has established clear control.
Denis Villeneuve's 8 films span a wide range: Dune at 64% to Enemy at 27%. Incendies sits at #7.
