The Verdict Director's Cut

Annie Wilkes saying "dirty birdy" with genuine moral outrage while preparing to break a man's ankles is the most fully realised character in Reiner's filmography. The Sure Thing gives John Cusack a road trip, a love interest he pretends to dislike, and a director content to let charm carry everything. Both films work. But Reiner shooting the hobbling scene with patience, no score, just Bates's composure and Caan's dawning terror, is direction you can point to. The Sure Thing is directed competently. Misery is directed by someone who understood exactly how long to hold on a face before cutting. That difference explains a margin this wide.
