Alien: Romulus currently edges Alien³ 53–47
Two directors finding their footing inside the same franchise — no consensus.
The Verdict Decades Apart
Fincher was twenty-seven, fighting Fox, losing control of his own film, and he still managed to embed a genuine artistic vision inside the wreckage — Alien³'s funeral scene, scored to Goldenthal's requiem, is the franchise's most emotionally direct moment. Álvarez was working with more freedom and a clearer mandate: give the fans what they want, and he delivered a polished, effective horror-thriller that knows exactly what it is. The tie at 47 to 53 from 91 votes maps neatly onto an argument the franchise has been having since 1992: should an Alien film challenge its audience or serve them? Both approaches produced functional films. Neither produced a great one.
