The backburster scene in Covenant is the most visceral thing Scott directed since the chestburster in 1979. He returned to practical, physical, body-horror filmmaking after Prometheus's detour into origin mythology, and the return works because Scott's instincts for terror are sharper than his instincts for philosophy. Fassbender playing two androids in conversation with each other is the film's centrepiece, and the flute scene — David teaching Walter to play — has a menace that Prometheus's philosophical dialogue never achieves. The retreat to horror looks like a concession on paper. On screen, it looks like Scott remembering what he's best at.
